Madagascar - History and Demographics

Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean approximately 250 miles off the coast of East Africa. Madagascar belongs to the group of least developed countries. As a result of the island's long isolation from neighboring continents, Madagascar is home to various plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Approximately 90% of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic. This distinctive ecology has led some ecologists to refer to Madagascar as the “eighth continent”.

25% of the population live in areas highly prone to natural disasters. 76% of the population live in poverty making less than $1.90/day.
